Design + Build

Custom Kitchen Shelving Unit

This was a challenging and super fun project. It started with the client replacing their Sub Zero Refrigerator with a slightly smaller version, leaving 6 inches of extra space on the right side facing into the hallway. The goal was to design+build a custom shelf unit facing into the hallway space — repurposing the 30 year old solid hickory panels from the old Sub Zero Refrigerator. We were able to reconstruct the back panel, edge banding the plywood side, applying a matching stain specially mixed by our friends at JC Licht in Addison. Once the initial design was in place, we constructed a model shelf unit out of scrap pine stock showing various shelf radius ideas for the client to sit with for a week and decide which was best. Finally, on the Shop side, we fabricated the existing stained solid hickory stock into this beautiful piece — Even reworking the old front vent, reducing the size. This custom shelf unit seamlessly fits into this vintage hickory kitchen.

“Not only was the craftsmanship impeccable but Dave was also very considerate, responsive, and helped us think of how best to design the space to suit our family’s needs. He’s wonderful to work with and very thorough. We’d recommend him with no hesitations!”

From The Homeowner:

First, we started with a problem to be solved.

From there, we crafted and installed a mock up with various design options for the client to tweak toward a final design.

On the Shop side, we rebuilt the existing solid hickory vent, reducing it in size to fit the new shelf design.

We rebuilt the existing side panel into a new back panel, applying hickory edge banding, so it could suppoort the new shelves.

As the project started to take shape, we built the new shelves with a soft radius — all from previous stock

From there, we were able to assemble the shelf unit and get it ready to delivery + installation.

All ready for delivery + install — You can see the original marking from the cabinet company’s build 30 years ago.

From there, we installed the new reworked vent structure and added the shelf unit.

In the end, the project came together as a stunning new addition which doesn’t look like a “new addition” at all!
